Why short term rental locks are different

A rental lock has to be obvious to a stranger and controllable by you from anywhere, because a new group arrives every few nights, often after dark with a car full of beach gear.

In Carlsbad the turnover rarely stops: summer weeks near the beach, LEGOLAND and resort weekends, spring visitors to The Flower Fields. With the right lock, each checkout ends with a code that expires on its own instead of a key to recover.

Remote code changes

Add, change or delete a code from your phone or software. Nobody drives to the door.

A code for each stay

Live from check-in to check-out. Last week's guest cannot come back.

Entry logs

See which code opened the door and when: guests, cleaners, vendors.

Offline fallback

Codes live in the lock; a key or backup code covers a dead router.

Remote code door locks that work with your booking software

A remote code door lock joins its maker's cloud account, over Wi-Fi or through a bridge near the door, and that account connects to your booking platform, property management software or a code-management service. Each reservation then gets its own code for exactly its dates, sent to the guest with check-in instructions, and it stops working when the stay ends.

We first check that the lock and your software support each other at the plan you pay for; some connections need a paid tier. On install day we link the lock with you, run a test reservation and confirm the code opens the door. We are not a certified partner of any booking platform; we install the hardware and make the connection work. Brands, finishes and door fit are in the hardware details for our smart lock installs.

Owner closets, lockboxes and garages

The spaces guests should not reach get their own lock and their own codes. The owner's closet, with the good linens and the paddleboards, takes a keyed lock or a keypad your cleaner and co-host can open and guests cannot.

Lockboxes on gas meters and fence posts are easy to spot and seldom change code. Once the front door runs on codes, the box comes off or stays as a sealed backup with one key. At a beach rental, a keypad on the garage entry door or a code on the opener hands guests the bikes and boards without a remote leaving in a suitcase.

Airbnb keypad locks that hold up to salt air

Near the water, finish and placement decide how long a keypad lasts. Off Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard, and down through Ponto and South Carlsbad, plated finishes wear through and latches stiffen far sooner than inland. What we do at a rental door by the beach:

  • Finish. Coastal-rated stainless or PVD-coated hardware with stainless screws, and a sealed keypad gasket.
  • Placement. Keypads under an overhang where possible, turned from wind-driven spray, with physical buttons that stay readable in afternoon glare.
  • Batteries. Heat and heavy use drain them, so a battery check goes into your turnover routine with swaps on a schedule.

What the beach end of town is like for locks: the Tamarack beach area and Ponto and South Carlsbad.

A property manager locksmith for several units

Standardizing the hardware fixes most multi-unit problems. Six rentals with six lock brands means six apps and six ways for a code to fail; one setup means one of each:

  • One model across the portfolio, so guests, cleaners and spare parts all match.
  • One admin account, with co-hosts and cleaners as users who see only their units.
  • Scheduled service visits before summer to check batteries, latches and strikes across every unit in one trip.

A pre-season service visit is $89 per unit, and multi-unit terms start from 3 units.

The same setup suits second homes in Aviara and La Costa that sit empty between visits: let the pool service in with a dated code, check the log, never mail a key. Village rentals a short walk from the beach run the same way. Send us your unit list and we plan installs and service visits together.

Send us your unit list

How many units, where they are, which booking or property software you use and what is on the doors now. We reply with the hardware that fits and a per-door quote for each unit.

Locked out right now? Don't fill this in. Call 760-304-1806. After you send this we reply the same business day, and you can text a photo of the door to 760-304-1806 for a quote before we come.

Turnover and owner-change rekeys

Codes handle guests, but keys remain, and they should change whenever the people holding them do: the override cylinder, owner closet, side gate and mailbox, rekeyed when the property sells, when managers or cleaning crews change, or when a key goes missing. We can key a whole portfolio to one owner key and a separate staff key. The steps are on our page for turnover and owner-change rekeys.

Common questions from hosts

Can I change codes remotely?

Yes, if the lock is connected. A Wi-Fi lock, or one paired with a bridge near the door, lets you add, change and delete codes from your phone or booking software. A keypad-only lock stores codes too, but every change is made at the door. For a rental you manage from a distance we install the connected kind and test a remote change with you before we leave.

What if Wi-Fi goes down?

Codes already on the lock keep working, because they are stored in the lock, not the cloud. What pauses is anything new: codes for bookings made during the outage, remote changes and the entry log, which catches up later. We sync codes days before arrival, set one backup code only you know, and keep a mechanical key as the last fallback.

What if a guest's code fails at midnight?

Your fallback plan handles it, because we are not an overnight service. After closing time the same number rings the owner directly until 10 PM for lockouts only. No overnight service. At midnight, send the backup code from the app, check for a low battery, or have a local co-host open the door with the key. We write that plan down with you at setup.

Do you work with co-hosts or managers who run several units?

Yes. The owner or manager holds one admin account, and co-hosts and cleaners are added as users who see only their units. Across a portfolio we fit the same lock model on every door, quote per door, and group installs and service visits so several units are handled in one trip.

Can guests still get in if the battery dies?

Not by code, so the goal is that it never dies during a stay. Connected locks report low batteries in the app weeks ahead, and we add a battery check to your turnover routine. If one dies anyway, the mechanical key opens the door, and some keypads take a 9-volt jump from outside. Keep that key with a local co-host.
