Keypad deadbolts
Codes at the door, no phone required. The simplest upgrade, and the one that lasts when nobody in the house wants another app.
Connected smart deadbolts
Wi-Fi, Thread or Matter models that report whether the door is locked, send alerts and lock from your phone. Some talk straight to the router; others need a hub.
Retrofit units
Replace only the inside half and keep your exterior deadbolt and key. Useful when an HOA governs the outside look.
Smart handlesets
For entries where the thumb-latch handle and deadbolt are one matched set, common on the larger doors in Aviara and La Costa.

The lines we install include Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, Level and Kwikset Halo, plus the keypad models from the same families. Bought one already? We fit customer-supplied locks for labor only. If not, tell us how the door gets used and what hub is in the house, and we name one or two models that suit it.
Keypad deadbolt installation, fitted to your door
A smart lock is only as reliable as the door it sits on, so every install starts with the door. A motorized bolt has far less force than a hand on a thumb-turn: if it rubs the strike, it stalls, drains the battery, and the app reports the door as jammed.
Before the new lock goes on, we check:
- Bore and backset. Standard prep is a 2-1/8 inch hole at a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. A lock forced onto the wrong prep binds.
- Door thickness. Heavier custom slabs can exceed what a stock lock is built for; some models need an extension kit.
- Strike alignment. Stucco homes settle and doors sag on their hinges. We move or open up the strike so the bolt enters without touching.
- Weatherstripping pressure. Thick new seals push the door off the frame and load the bolt, which is why a lock can work in the morning and stall on a warm afternoon.
In newer tracts such as Robertson Ranch, Bressi Ranch and The Preserve, doors are usually drilled to standard dimensions, so an install is mostly alignment and setup. Custom and double doors in Aviara and La Costa vary more, since an astragal or a flush bolt on the inactive leaf changes where the deadbolt lands. Matching your HOA and your finish
We bring finish samples to the door so the new lock matches your light fixtures and house numbers; your association's rules decide what may change on the outside. Many of Carlsbad's master-planned communities have architectural guidelines for the front of a house. Some specify a hardware finish or require approval for a visible change, others say nothing, so check your CC&Rs before committing to a new exterior.
The common smart lock finishes are satin nickel, matte black and satin or aged brass, under names that change from brand to brand. If the rules or your taste call for keeping the exterior exactly as it is, a retrofit unit changes only the inside.

Smart lock repair and troubleshooting
We repair smart locks we did not install, including the builder-installed keypads in many newer Carlsbad homes. The usual problems, in the order we see them:
- Motor stalls or the bolt only half-throws. Nearly always alignment or weatherstripping. We fix the door, then recalibrate the lock so it relearns the throw.
- Batteries drain in weeks. A binding bolt, a weak Wi-Fi signal the lock keeps retrying, or the wrong battery type.
- Drops off the app or the hub. A router change, a hub out of range, or a firmware update that did not finish. We re-pair and update.
- Keypad fading, sticking or cracked. Common on doors that take direct afternoon sun or sea air. Some models allow the exterior assembly to be replaced; others need a new lock.

Pair it with a high-security cylinder
A keypad changes how you get in; it does not make the key side harder to pick or the key harder to copy. Several keyed smart deadbolts accept a replacement cylinder, and on those we can fit a patented, restricted-key cylinder so the override key cannot be duplicated at a kiosk. What goes into the quote
Every install is quoted before we touch the door. Labor to fit a lock you supply starts at $149. A lock we supply and install runs $349–$499 depending on the model, and doors that need new prep or strike work add $45–$95. The full table is on our installation pricing page.
A scheduled install carries one $69 service call for the trip, added to the labor; there is never a second trip charge on the same visit. Rekeying the smart lock's key cylinder to match your house key is $25. On a move-in visit, the smart lock fitting shares the trip with the rekey of the other doors, so the invoice still carries one service call.

Smart lock questions from Carlsbad homeowners
Will a smart lock fit my door?
Almost always. Most Carlsbad front doors built since the 1980s are drilled for a standard deadbolt, the prep most smart deadbolts are made for. For an odd backset, a thick custom slab, a mortise lock or a handleset tied to the deadbolt, we pick a model that fits or adjust the prep. A photo of the door edge and the inside hardware usually settles it before we come out.
Do you install smart locks I bought myself?
Yes. Installing a lock you supply starts at $149 in labor, including alignment, setup in your app and a test from outside the house. If the door needs new prep or strike work, that adds $45–$95, and we tell you before starting. If the lock you bought will not suit the door, we say so before it comes out of the box.
What happens if the smart lock battery dies?
You get weeks of warning first, in the app and at the keypad. If the batteries do run out, most models still open with the physical key, and many accept a 9-volt battery or USB-C cable at the keypad for a moment of power so you can enter a code. If a dead lock leaves you outside anyway, we treat it as a lockout call.
Can I keep using a key with a smart lock?
Yes. Most keypad deadbolts we install keep a key cylinder, and we can rekey it to your house key so one key still opens every door. A few fully keyless models drop the cylinder; we only suggest those when you have a second way in, such as a keypad on the garage.
Do I need Wi-Fi for a smart lock?
No. A keypad deadbolt runs on codes alone with no network. You need Wi-Fi, a hub or a Thread border router only to lock, unlock or check the door from your phone while away, get alerts, or connect it to a home system. We set up whichever level you choose before we leave.
