Master key system design and key control
A master key system gives the owner one key for everything, each department a key for its own doors, and the cleaning crew only what it needs. It is a plan on paper before it is pins in a cylinder.
We start with a keying chart: every door listed, grouped by who needs it, with the levels written out (grand master, masters by floor or department, individual change keys). We pin every cylinder at the bench and stamp keys with a code, not a door name, so a lost key does not announce what it opens.
The chart stays on file with room to grow. When you take the suite next door in a Faraday Avenue flex building or add a second storefront, new cylinders slot into the existing system instead of forcing a rekey of everything. System design is $395, before cylinders and keys.
Office lock changes when staff leave
An office lock change after someone leaves is key control: you need to know who still holds a key to your space and be able to prove it. We rekey the affected cylinders the same day when the schedule allows.
A manager who left on bad terms, a missing key ring or a suite turning over usually needs a rekey, not new hardware. On a master-keyed system we change only the level that was exposed and update the chart, so the next person inherits an accurate record.
Standard keys can be copied at any kiosk, so a lock change only lasts until the next copy. Offices that change staff often do better with restricted keyways, where blanks are controlled and duplicates need an authorized signature. We explain the platforms on our page about keys that can't be copied at a kiosk.
Panic bar repair and exit device replacement
Most panic bar repair is adjustment, lubrication or one worn part, not a new device. The bar is life-safety hardware first: anyone inside must be able to push it and walk out, every time, without a key.
Repair
Bars that stick, latches that miss the strike, rods that bind at the top and bottom of a pair of doors.
Replacement
Rim, surface vertical rod and concealed vertical rod devices matched to the door, with outside trim for how it is used: pull only, lever, or key-retracted.
Dogging
Holding the latch retracted during business hours so customers push straight through. Fire-rated doors cannot be dogged mechanically, and we will not set them up to be.
Egress that stays compliant
No chains, padlocks or deadbolts added to an exit door. If a door needs more security, we change the hardware so the way out stays free.
In the flex and R&D buildings off Palomar Airport Road, rear and shipping doors see carts, forklifts and propped-open afternoons. Their exit devices wear faster than the lobby's, and a failed latch there often goes unnoticed until the building is found unlocked in the morning. We check the whole opening: hinges, closer, strike and threshold.
Door closer repair and storefront door lock repair
A closer that slams, drifts or leaves the door unlatched is one of our most frequent commercial calls and often a quick fix: adjusting sweep and latch speed, or replacing a closer that leaks oil.
Carlsbad Village storefronts on State Street and Carlsbad Village Drive mix narrow-stile aluminum doors with older wood doors behind historic facades. The aluminum doors typically use a mortise hook-bolt deadlock in the style Adams Rite made standard, a cylinder worn by daily use, and offset or center-hung pivots that sag after years of traffic. The wood doors bring shifted frames, strikes that no longer line up and closers never sized for the door.
In La Costa Towne Center, Bressi Ranch Village and The Forum, the calls are the same aluminum storefront hardware on busier doors, plus back-of-house delivery doors for restaurants and retailers. We rebuild or replace pivots and swap worn storefront deadlocks and cylinders. On a historic frame, we choose a closer mounting that does not damage what the building owner wants preserved.
Property managers and HOAs
We maintain common-area hardware for Carlsbad's master-planned communities and multi-tenant buildings, and supply the certificate of insurance and itemized invoices managers need.
Pool gates and clubhouse doors
Self-closing, self-latching pool gate hardware and clubhouse locks for Aviara, La Costa and Robertson Ranch associations, kept on the association key system.
Mailrooms and common doors
Mailroom, storage, trash enclosure and roof-access doors, keyed so staff and vendors get only what they need.
Certificate of insurance
A COI naming the association or management company, sent before we start. Invoices itemized per door.
Every job is quoted in writing before work starts. See our published rates for closers, exit devices and key systems.
Several doors that need attention?
One walk-through, every opening noted, one written proposal instead of piecemeal service calls. Licensed, insured, COI on request. Mon–Sat 7 AM–7 PM · Sun 8 AM–5 PM.
Ready for credentials?
If you rekey the same doors every few months, electronic access is usually the better answer. Readers can go on the doors that matter while the rest stay mechanical.
This is common in Palomar Airport Road flex buildings that already mix keyed and badge doors. Ready to replace keys with credentials? Our access control page covers how those systems are designed and installed.
Commercial locksmith questions from Carlsbad businesses
Can you rekey our office the same day a staff member leaves?
Usually, yes, when the schedule allows. We rekey the affected cylinders on site without replacing hardware. On a master-keyed system we change only the level that person held and update your keying chart. Call early in the day for the best chance of a same-day visit.
Do you repair panic bars or replace them?
Both, and repair comes first. Most sticking bars, latches that miss and binding vertical rods need adjustment, lubrication or one worn part. We replace the device when it is damaged or wrong for the door; a replacement exit device runs $450–$950 depending on grade and trim.
Can one key open everything for the manager?
Yes. That is a master key system: the manager's key opens every door while staff keys open only their areas. Tamarack Security designs the system for $395, plus cylinders and keys, and keeps the keying chart on file so a new suite joins without rekeying everything.
Do you work on aluminum storefront doors?
Yes. Narrow-stile aluminum storefront doors are routine work for us in Carlsbad Village and the shopping centers: mortise hook-bolt deadlocks, cylinders, pivots, closers and exit devices. Most calls are a worn deadlock or cylinder, or a sagging pivot that stops the door from latching.
Do you carry insurance for property managers?
Yes. Tamarack Security is a licensed and insured locksmith. Property managers and HOAs can get a certificate of insurance naming them as additional insured before we start, and invoices are itemized per door.
