A key card entry system for your office, instead of keys
A key card entry system lets you switch off one person's access in under a minute, which a metal key never can. That is why most offices on the Palomar Airport Road corridor move to credentials once they pass a dozen people or take a second suite.
With keys, a departing employee or a lost ring means a lock change on every door that key opened. With credentials, you disable that one badge from a browser or app and everyone else keeps working. The door hardware stays where it is.
Each door also keeps a log of who opened it and when. Schedules unlock the lobby at 7:30 and relock it at 6:00, and a lab or server room admits only the four people who belong there.
Cards and key fobs
Encrypted 13.56 MHz smart cards and fobs are our default. Older 125 kHz proximity cards are easy to clone, so we plan a migration when we find them.
Phone credentials
Bluetooth or NFC credentials in an employee phone wallet or app. Nothing to collect when someone leaves.
Instant revocation
Disable one person, a contractor group or a lost badge from the admin portal. On networked systems the change reaches the door in seconds.
Cloud-based access control or an on-premise system
Cloud-based access control suits most small and growing North County San Diego companies; on-premise suits sites with strict IT rules or no tolerance for internet outages. We choose after seeing the doors, the network closet and who will run the admin side.
Admin from a browser or phone
Door controllers report to a hosted service over the building's internet. You add and remove people from anywhere, firmware updates arrive on their own, and a company with a second office outside Carlsbad sees both in one dashboard. Expect a per-door or per-site subscription, and each controller needs a reliable network drop.
Controller and software on your network
A panel in the IDF or server room holds the database and decides locally, with software on a workstation or server you own. Nothing depends on an outside service and there may be no recurring fee, but your side maintains the software and backups. A fit for labs with strict IT policies or sites extending a panel they already have.
Both use the same readers and door hardware. You see which one we recommend, and its ongoing fees, before anything is ordered.
Door badge reader installation and the hardware that releases the door
The badge reader decides who may enter; an electric strike, electrified lever or maglock at the door does the releasing. Choosing that hardware correctly for each opening is most of the craft.
Electric strikes
Replace the strike in the frame so the existing latch releases electrically. The usual choice for wood and hollow-metal office doors, and for aluminum storefront frames with the right strike body.
Electrified trim and locksets
The lever or exit-device trim itself locks and unlocks. Clean on glass-and-aluminum lobby doors and on frames that cannot take a strike.
Magnetic locks
A magnet on the frame holds a steel plate on the door. Simple and strong, but they need the most life-safety planning, so we use them only where nothing else fits.
Request-to-exit devices
A motion sensor, push button or switch in the lever or exit bar tells the system someone is leaving, so it does not log a forced door and, where needed, releases the lock.
Most controlled doors keep a mechanical cylinder for the day the power, network or a reader fails. That override key opens the building, so it should not be copyable at a hardware store. We usually fit a restricted keyway there; see our key-override cylinders on controlled doors.
Built for labs, suites and multi-tenant buildings
Most access control jobs in Carlsbad's business parks are suite-level: your tenant space gets its own controlled doors while the landlord's lobby stays on the landlord's system.
Much of the Palomar Airport Road business corridor, along Faraday Avenue, Camino Vida Roble and College Boulevard, is one- and two-story flex and R&D space: a shared lobby, then suites of a few thousand square feet holding offices, a wet lab and a roll-up door. That is the pattern in the Carlsbad Research Center, Carlsbad Oaks North and the parks near McClellan-Palomar Airport.
We plan for it from the first walk. Your system belongs to you, moves with your lease, and never opens doors you do not control.
- Lab and clean-area doors. Restricted groups for labs and storage, with finishes that tolerate your cleaning protocols.
- IDF and server rooms. Card-only entry with a log for IT and auditors, plus a door-held-open alert when someone props it.
- After-hours schedules. Lobby open during reception hours, badge-only evenings and weekends, holidays set once a year.
- Small offices and medical suites. Two to six doors in the Bressi Ranch and La Costa commercial centers, often a front door and a staff entrance.
Integrations with video, visitors, alarm and elevators
We connect access control to cameras, visitor sign-in, the intrusion alarm or elevators when the chosen platform supports it and we have installed that link before.
- Video. Each door event links to the camera clip from that moment, so a forced-door alert arrives with a picture.
- Visitor management. Guests get a time-limited credential or a host notification instead of a sign-in sheet.
- Intrusion alarm. Arm and disarm with the first and last badge of the day. Monitoring stays with your alarm company.
- Elevators. Floor-by-floor access where a building needs it, coordinated with the elevator contractor.
How an access control project runs
A single-suite project in Carlsbad typically moves from site walk to working doors in two to seven weeks. Hardware lead times and landlord approvals move that more than anything we do.
Site walk. Usually within 2 to 5 business days of your request. We check every opening, frame, power and network path, and who needs to go where. You can also request a site walk from our contact page.
Door schedule. A line per door: what stays, what gets electrified, which reader and release, fail-safe or fail-secure, and how people get out. Typically 3 to 5 business days after the walk.
Proposal. A written figure per door and for the controller, software and any recurring fees, plus what we need from your landlord or IT. Our published per-door ranges give you a first budget before we meet.
Install. Parts commonly take 1 to 4 weeks after approval. A 4 to 10 door suite typically takes 1 to 3 working days on site, early or after hours where noise or lab access matters.
Training. An hour or two with whoever runs the admin side: people, schedules, reports, and what to do when a door will not release.
Support. The same local number for a dead reader, a batch of new hires or an added door. Your door schedule stays on file, so the next change starts from what is there.

Licensing and insurance
Tamarack Security is a licensed and insured California locksmith company, and each technician carries a state locksmith registration.
Some low-voltage access control work may also require a California contractor's license from the CSLB, such as a C-7 (low voltage systems) or C-10 (electrical), depending on scope and size. We confirm the license class before any project starts, and if a scope needs a license we do not hold, we tell you plainly.
Property managers and landlords can have a certificate of insurance naming them as additional insured before we start. Read who we are and how we are licensed and insured.
Keep the mechanical side covered
A reader only works if the door behind it closes and latches. Our commercial side handles the exit devices, closers and mechanical hardware on controlled openings and on the doors that stay on keys, often on the same visit.
Access control questions from Carlsbad offices
What is the typical budget per controlled door?
Most doors run $1,200–$2,800 each. That covers the reader, a share of the controller, the electric strike or maglock, wiring, programming and handover. Cloud platforms add a software subscription, which the written proposal lists separately. Tamarack Security quotes every project in writing after a free site walk in Carlsbad.
Can we keep our existing keys as an override?
Yes. Most controlled doors keep a mechanical cylinder so the door still opens if power, the network or a reader fails. We usually swap that cylinder for a restricted-keyway one, so the override key cannot be copied at a hardware store and only named people hold it.
Do you need a contractor license for access control work?
Sometimes. Tamarack Security is a licensed and insured California locksmith company. Depending on scope and job size, low-voltage access control can also require a CSLB contractor's license such as C-7 or C-10. We confirm the license class before a project starts and tell you plainly if a scope needs a license we do not hold.
How long does an access control install take?
A 4 to 10 door suite typically takes 1 to 3 working days on site. Before that, parts commonly take 1 to 4 weeks after you approve the proposal, and landlord approval can add time. We schedule early mornings or after hours where noise or lab access matters.
Can one system cover two suites or two buildings?
Yes. One system can run doors in two suites, or in a second building, from a single admin portal, and cloud-managed platforms make that simplest. Each suite stays on your system and moves with your lease; the landlord's shared lobby stays on the landlord's system unless they agree otherwise.
Request a site walk
Have three things ready: roughly how many doors, the building or street, and when you want it running. We reply the same business day, walk the site within 2 to 5 business days, and send a written door schedule and proposal after. The walk is free in Carlsbad.
Rather talk it through first?
Call and describe the building, or text a photo of the door and frame you want on a reader. Mon–Sat 7 AM–7 PM · Sun 8 AM–5 PM.
