Rekey your house after buying
Rekey on move-in day, because nobody can tell you how many copies of the old keys exist. In Robertson Ranch and the newer phases of Calavera Hills and The Preserve, painters, flooring crews, cleaners and builder staff held keys for months.
Some builders use construction-keyed cylinders that lock out trade keys once the homeowner key turns. Not every builder does, and not every door gets one. A rekey settles the question.
Resale homes in La Costa, Aviara, Poinsettia and Rancho Carrillo carry a different history: the previous owners, their cleaners, the dog walker, a neighbor who watered the plants. Rekey or change locks on a new home?
Rekey when the locks are sound; replace them when the lock itself is the problem. A rekey changes the pins inside the cylinder so it answers to a new key, while the hardware, finish and feel of the door stay the same.
We recommend new hardware when:
- the deadbolt sticks, wobbles or only throws if you pull the door;
- the finish is pitted from salt air, common on west-facing doors near the coast;
- the house has a mix of brands that will never share one key;
- you want a smart lock or a high-security cylinder anyway.
Supplied and installed, a new deadbolt runs $95–$165 and a front-door handleset $185–$325, builder-grade to mid-range, with the one $69 service call for the visit added once.
Replacement comes up most in the Village and Olde Carlsbad, where cottages and mid-century homes carry decades of mixed, worn hardware. In the newer tracts the builder hardware is usually sound, and a rekey is the right call.
One key for the whole house
We key every cylinder alike, so one key opens the whole house: the front deadbolt and handleset, the door from the garage, a side or back door, a keyed slider, and sometimes a side gate. The only requirement is a shared keyway, which usually means one brand, and most tracts were built with one. The example above shows how a 5-cylinder house adds up.
Your move-in checklist
Changing the locks is half of a secure move-in; remotes, codes and fobs from the previous owner still work until someone resets them. Here is how the work splits, and what to have ready.

Mailbox lock replacement for cluster boxes
We replace the lock on your own cluster mailbox compartment for $65, with new keys. Most newer Carlsbad tracts use USPS cluster box units, the gray pedestal mailboxes at the end of the street, and changing your own compartment lock is generally the resident's job.
The Postal Service controls the master door and its arrow lock; we never touch the carrier's side or the parcel lockers. Some HOAs manage mailbox keys themselves, so check your HOA documents first.
Upgrade while we're there
If new hardware was on your list anyway, move-in day is the easiest moment to fit it: one visit, doors already open, keys cut once.
Or go keyless while we're there
A keypad or app lock on the front entry, fitted and set up in your name the same visit. The front door never needs a key again.
High-security cylinders with patented keys
Keys that cannot be copied at a hardware kiosk, in pick- and bump-resistant cylinders. Worth it when you want to know exactly how many keys exist.
Lock change for roommates, renters and lost keys
The process is the same and the job is shorter: new pins, new keys, old keys dead. It fits a roommate moving out, a relationship ending, or a key ring lost on the coast walk.
Renters should get the landlord's written okay first, and we leave a key for the owner or property manager if the lease calls for it. Cannot get in at all right now? That is a house lockout first, and we can rekey on the same visit.
Move-in rekey questions
Should I rekey or replace the locks after buying a house?
Rekey if the locks work smoothly and you like how they look. It makes every old key useless for $25 per cylinder. Replace a lock that sticks, is pitted from salt air, or that you want to swap for a smart lock anyway. Many move-ins do both.
How many locks does a typical Carlsbad home need rekeyed?
Our whole-house example assumes 5 keyed cylinders: the front deadbolt, the front handleset, the door from the garage, a side or back door, and a keyed slider or side gate. Count every keyhole on the outside of the house. We confirm the number on the phone before we come.
Can you make every door work with one key?
Yes, when the locks share a keyway, which usually means the same brand. Most Carlsbad tracts were built with one brand throughout. If the house mixes brands, such as Schlage and Kwikset, we replace the odd lock or two so one key still opens everything.
